For Nurses Week, Brandi Haefcke, Clinical Leader Alberta for Classic LifeCare (pictured above with her family) took a few minutes this week to reflect on what it means to be a nurse. See the Questions and Answers below.
Nurses Week Q&A
Q: How long have you been a nurse?
A: I graduated in January 2010, and worked as a Healthcare Aide for 2 years prior.
Q: Why did you become a nurse in the first place?
A: My grandmother was a nurse. She was tiny in stature but incredibly strong in her person. I loved how she could connect with anyone anytime. She could just walk into the room and make you feel better. I wanted to emulate that.
Q: How long have you been at Classic?
A: I’m a newbie. Since March 18th, 2018.
Q: What do you love about your job at Classic so far?
A: I love that I am able to support, empower, and challenge our field staff in providing excellent care to our clients. I love the dynamics in homecare, because we have the time to journey with clients; allowing for them to maintain autonomy and independence, and ultimately quality of life.
Q: What is the hardest part of being a nurse?
A: Hmmmm. There are many challenges; working with those clients who seem to refuse to be comforted, is probably the toughest for me.
Q: What do you like to do when you’re not working?
A: I love my family! I sing in a small ensemble. I also love hiking, skiing, riding (horses) when I can.
Q: Anything else you’d like to add?
A: It is a deep and special privilege and honour to be invited into the lives of people when they are in their most vulnerable moments. To share and be a part of helping them reach their goals, from complete recovery to peaceful passing. There is nothing like it.

Susan Fulton, Classic LifeCare’s Clinical Leader, says Brandi has a warm, engaging smile and when you first meet her you immediately feel comfortable.
Susan describes Brandi as an excellent listener, who puts all her attention on what you are saying when you speak.
“I love that she puts employee engagement and support as a top priority, as well as safety for clients,” beams Susan. “She is very smart and does her research before providing you with an answer. This nurse is definitely in the right field of work to make a difference in her clients’ lives, at the same time ensuring the employees are treated with respect, care and support.”
Britney Didier-Shaw, Regional Leader – Alberta, says Brandi’s extensive experience at Alberta Health Services prior to Classic has offered new and welcome knowledge and education.
“I can tell the Brandi will play a big part in advocating for our clients,” says Britney. “She has already developed an empathetic connection to the many ages we serve.”
