Despite the cold and blustery weather, it did not deter the people of the Comox Valley from attending our Fire Safety for Seniors open house. This insightful Courageous Conversations event was led by Jim Lariviere, Assistant Fire Chief from the Comox Fire Rescue. He offered crucial tips to mitigate fire risks as we approach the fall and winter seasons when home fires become more prevalent.
Courageous Conversations September Open House
The Fire Safety for Seniors talk took place at the Comox Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, September 26. This was part of the Courageous Conversations initiative that commenced earlier this year. Four organizations in the Comox Valley come together to inform residents about local resources. The aim is to keep the people of Comox safe and healthy, with a special focus on seniors and caregivers.
Courageous Conversations is a collaboration between Classic LifeCare Comox, the Comox Valley Senior Support Society, Alongside Caregiver Consulting, and Keystone Eldercare Solutions. These open houses take place on the last Tuesday of each month, addressing a different topic at each session.
Fire Safety for Seniors
At the Comox Fire Rescue, Jim provides operational duties along with public education and fire inspection. The event kicked off with a fire safety trivia quiz, creating a fun and open atmosphere. The attendees were engaged throughout the session, with a continuous stream of excellent questions from the attendees.
A wealth of information was covered including the safe use of extension cords, smoke alarm placement and maintenance, the use of fire extinguishers, and the flammability of modern household materials. The seniors provided overwhelmingly positive feedback, emphasizing the value and informativeness of the discussion.
