Expanding Foot Care Services in Comox

Classic LifeCare is getting off on the right foot in the Comox Valley – focusing on expanding its existing nursing foot care service along with its other home care offerings.

“Nursing foot care is so much more than clipping toe nails,” says Susan Fulton, Classic LifeCare’s clinical leader, who has had her advanced foot care nursing for more than eight years. “Foot care nursing is about foot health and preventative care.

“Healthy feet are key to a person being able to stand, walk, weight bear and be mobile. As a foot care nurse, you can make a difference in someone’s life and assist them to stay in their home in the community longer – which is the goal of home care, in general.”

Who can avail of these services?

Clients of all ages can benefit from foot care nursing, although most clients are elderly. Foot care becomes more difficult as we age. People can experience decreased flexibility, macular degeneration, glaucoma and other health issues that put them in a high-risk category such as diabetes.

“The nurse has the appropriate tools to safely manage thickened toenails, callouses, and corns. Standard foot care treatment involves the care of the foot and nails, client teaching, physical health assessment and mobility. We perform an assessment of each client in order to develop an appropriate treatment plan, specific to their foot care needs. Each visit also allows a thorough assessment of skin integrity and monitoring any concerns with health promotion. Plus, while in the client’s home we can assess the client’s general health and make safety observations about their surroundings.”

Fulton says foot circulation, colour, temperature and sensation can all be indications of a person’s health and nurses can make recommendations in the care plan accordingly.
