It is extremely important to regularly carry out a breast cancer self-exam for early detection. Many reports indicate that with the increasing awareness of cancer prevention and early detection, success rates are higher.

Women are encouraged to speak with their family doctor about their risk factors and obtain information of Mammogram screening in their area.

Breast cancer self-exam’s play a significant role in finding breast cancer. No matter how old you are, it is important to become familiar with your body and talk to your Dr. when you notice any changes.

Men make up about 1% of breast cancer. Encourage self-examination for men as well.

Breast Cancer Self-Exam Tips:

  1. Stand straight, with shoulders level and observe your breasts in a mirror. Look for any changes in shape, color and size.
  1. Raise both arms above head and again observe for any changes in size, shape or color
  1. Observe any discharge from nipples
  1. Lay on your back with one arm raised and the opposite fingers apply gentle pressure on and around the breast tissue from the armpit and towards the center of your chest. Ask yourself if you feel any lumps, hardening or thickened areas.
  1. Perform a self-examination at least once monthly.

Breast Cancer Risk Factors:

  • increasing age, with increased risk over age 65
  • overweight
  • decreased physical activity
  • increase alcohol consumption, with high saturated fat dietary intake

Prevention tips and healthy lifestyle choices:

  • eat healthy balanced meals,
  • avoid excessive amounts of alcohol
  • avoid tobacco
  • exercise and maintain a healthy weight
  • DON’T skip the ANNUAL mammogram and do the breast self-exam at least once a month

Cancer Preventing Foods:

  • Raw walnuts are rich in omega 3, antioxidants and help to lower LDL cholesterol and blood pressure
  • Broccoli, raw is best
  • Pommegranotes are high in antioxidants which aid in the fight against cancers (look for them in the winter months at your fruit and veggie market)
  • Add extra fiber to you smoothies
